Mersea’s Young Warriors Take Care of Business in Harwich

Tom Brennan and Craig Sestak took their hard charging Under 14s to Harwich on 7th Jan for the final series of matches in the 2018 Suffolk Shield.

In very strong winds the lads opened up with a match against Hadleigh. Starting slow they then started to make their power and pace tell and with some excellent strong running soon had the scoreboard ticking over. Mercy is not a word these young warriors have much time for and by the final whistle they had despatched a plucky but hopelessly outgunned Hadleigh by 35 - 12.

With barely a 5 minute break they then took the field against homeboys Harwich but lost the toss and so gave themselves even more work to do playing into the very strong winds. Harwich delivered a nasty early shock with an excellent running movecandcyry under the posts which was duly converted. Waking slowly from their odd slumber the lads then began to move through the gears and with some owner full
Breaks up the middle soon crossed for their own first try. Though Harwich - and the elements - made the job a tough one the loose play from the Mersea Boys gradually starved their opponents of ball and heart and the points started to come. By the final whistle they had extended to a 26 - 12 win to finish as Suffolk Shield Champions for 2018. Having wrapped up
The Suffolk Junior 7s earlier in the season this leaves the lads with 2 pieces of silverware and who knows how much more come. The quality of their play, structure, straight running, aggressive breakdown play and suffocating ball retention makes them a formidable young unit ..... we should be hugely proud of them all and massive congrats to Tom and Craig for what they have built in them ....

Go Mersea Blue!!!!
